How to Create a Cohesive Interior Design

Interior design involves more than paint and decorations. You need to plan and think hard about what will represent you and your family in your new, custom home. Let’s look at how to create a cohesive design throughout your next home.

Pick the same color groups throughout your home.

The easiest way to create a cohesive design is to stick with the same or similar colors throughout your home. You may choose one main color or a neutral color that will be present from room to room. Or you may use the same group of colors—usually found in threes—that will be used in different amounts around each room. You may also choose to pick one or two main colors, and then you will use different hues of those colors throughout the house. You can still mix up your color scheme without completely changing it.

Think about your sightlines from room to room.

Though you may think each room is separate from the others, there is often a sightline from one room to the next. For example, from your custom kitchen, you may see your living room, dining room, and a hallway. These are three sightlines that must be accounted for when creating your cohesive interior design. Though you want each room to stand out in its own way, the colors and themes should match, even a little, to ensure you have a beautiful view wherever you look.

Find a simple theme that can flow through your home.

If you choose to use a neutral color throughout your home, you should consider a central theme that will encompass your entire home. You may love the look of southwest artifacts, or perhaps your family loves traveling and collecting décor from around the world. Take these potential design ideas and allow them to flow throughout your home. For example, you may pick small accent pieces of southwestern décor that can set in each room to tie in your central theme.
